THE BLAINE COMMUNITY TODAY

While some historians have referred to "Blaine" as a "Dead Town", "Blaine" is still listed as a location on many maps. The U.S. Geological Survey has listed the Community of Blaine in its "Geographic Names Phase 1 Data Complilation (1976-1981)." A copy of the Feature Details, pertaining to the Community of Blaine, published by the U.S. Geological Survey's "Geographic Names Phase 1 Data Complilation (1976-1981)" is at the following link:

The primary business in the Blaine Community today is "Bart's Bait and Tackle". Below, is a picture of the building, in which Bart's Bait and Tackle is located.

According to the Pickens County Tax Assessor's office, the building, in which Bart's Bait and Tackle is located, was built in 1890.

According to a local person, this building was built by the "Barnes" family, which, according to this person, is the same family of Roy E Barnes, a former Governor of the State of Georgia.

This same person, also reported that this building contained the U.S. Post Office for Blaine. This may be the same Post Office described at postalhistory.com. See the following link:postalhistory.com source

HOW BLAINE GOT ITS NAME

The 6th paragraph of page 20 of "Georgia Place-Names" authored by Kenneth K. Krakow and published by Winship Press, Macon GA in 1975, states as follows:

"BLAINE, . . . This dead town was named for James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893), who was a U.S. Senator from Maine, Secretary of State, and presidential nominee in 1884. This town was originally called TALKING ROCK(q.v.) and was named Blaine after the name Talking Rock was transferred to the community of Loves(q.v.). . . ."

WHEN WAS THE BLAINE COMMUNITY FORMED

Since the Community, which was known as the Blaine Community, was originally called Talking Rock before the name Talking Rock was moved to the Community of Loves and since such move occurred around 1883, when Modern Talking Rock was incorporated, the Blaine Community (known as "Blaine") was most likely formed in 1883 or 1884.

According to postalhistory.com, there was a post office in the Blaine Community from 1889-1917.
